Earl Grey Tea Latte
Warm and cozy, this easy earl grey tea latte is the perfect relaxing drink! So save yourself some money and make this coffee shop beverage at home instead. Gluten free and vegetarian with dairy free and vegan options.
I have always loved tea. I remember when I was growing up, my dad had a cup of hot Lipton tea almost every night before bed. Somewhere along the way, I joined in on this routine.
The warm beverage was so soothing and helped me relax before heading to sleep.
I’ve had a number of earl grey tea lattes from Starbucks, but it is really nice to be able to make these at home. That way I can stay in my pajamas, cuddle up with a blanket, and just enjoy.
It took some fiddling to get these just the way I like them, but I’m finally completely happy with the result.
I make these lattes much more frequently now that it is cooler outside. There is something about them that makes me think of the holidays.
So the next time you need to unwind after a long day, spend about 5 minutes making one of these – it will make your night that much better.

Earl Grey Tea Latte
Warm and cozy, this easy earl grey tea latte is the perfect relaxing drink! So save yourself some money and make this coffee shop beverage at home instead. Gluten free and vegetarian with dairy free and vegan options.
Ingredients
- 1 earl grey tea bag
- ¾ cup boiling water
- ¾ cup milk of choice*
- ½ to 1 tablespoon vanilla syrup, depending on desired sweetness**
- sprinkle of cinnamon
Instructions
- Add the tea bag to a mug and pour in the boiling water. Let steep for about 2 to 3 minutes. Remove the tea bag.
- Meanwhile, add the milk to a small saucepan set over medium heat. Heat until just steaming (do not let the milk boil). Alternatively, you can heat the milk in the microwave. {If desired, you can whisk the steamed milk until very frothy before pouring it into the mug (or use a milk frother). I just prefer these lattes without the foam.}
- Add the milk to the mug and stir in the vanilla syrup. Top with a sprinkle of cinnamon and enjoy.
Notes
*To keep this dairy free / vegan - use a non dairy milk of choice.
**If you do not have vanilla syrup, you can substitute a teaspoon or so of regular granulated sugar and a splash of vanilla extract. Adjust the quantities to your own taste.

This is really delicious! I forgot to add the vanilla syrup and added a bit too much cinnamon, but I loved the spice! I added 2 teaspoons of honey but it wasn’t very sweet which I love 🙂 This will be my go to latte now!
Love this! So glad you enjoyed 🙂 Thanks for letting me know Kim!
Loves it
So glad you enjoyed April!
I absolutely loved the recipe. Since it’s freezing outside, I’m not in the mood to go to my usual teashop for a latte, and came across this website. I loved the addition of the cinnamon on the top. Thank you!
Oh I’m so happy to hear this Alice! Thanks for taking the time to let me know! 🙂
Delicious! and quick and easy for the early mornings.
Hey Carrie! So happy to hear you enjoy it! Thanks so much for taking the time to let me know 🙂
I became addicted to this stuff over the holidays. The cinnamon I had on hand just didn’t do the latte justice so I went down to my favorite spice shop where I found Supreme Saigon Cinnamon. Much sweeter and with a bite, almost as if there were a tinge of ground red pepper mixed in (which there isn’t). Perfection in a mug! I also use 1/2 cup milk and 1/4 cup heavy cream. Veerrry creamy! All ingredients are a staple in our house. Thanks so much!
haha I love it! So happy to hear you are enjoying these! That cinnamon sounds fantastic.
I did make this. It’s pretty good. I had too much water while I steeped the tea. I had to dump it out and add more frothy milk. I used Vanilla Almond milk (which was what I had on hand) instead of regular milk. I also whisked my milk which was great. I used sugar and pure vanilla extract. I actually couldn’t taste the vanilla, which when I remember getting them from Bigbby’s (local Michigan coffee shop), I never tasted it.I put a little too much cinnamon (came out fast) so the first few sips were fun. All in all, very relaxing. 🙂
So glad you enjoyed it Michelle! I’m with you – I love making one before bed for a relaxing drink 🙂
Perfect balance of tea and milk! I added 1 tbsp of vanilla extract which enhances the drink further.
So happy to hear you enjoyed it Sofia! Thanks for taking the time to let me know 🙂
This tea was perfect with my breakfast on a crisp fall morning! I only put a drop of vanilla in and it was spot on with flavor. I use an organic Earl Gray Tea that has an amazing flavor to begin with! Thank you for the new idea!
Awesome! I’m so happy to hear this! Thanks for letting me know Molly 🙂
Ashley;
Hi,I just found your earl grey tea latte recipe and I just copied down your recipe that I am going to make as soon as I go buy a box of decaffeinated earl Greg tea bags.
Being a diabetic for five years I am not sure if I can use the vanilla syrup in your recipe when I make it at home soon.can I use the stevia vanilla liquid or the powder in your tea recipe?
I am lactose intolerant so I use almond milk, cashew milk, coconut milk and natrel milk.can I use these milk products in your recipe?
I have a k- cup machine at home that my family and I use on a daily basis, can I use the hot water to heat up the milk and steep the earl Greg tea bag in it when I make it into a latte?
I love your dog he or she is so beautiful.I love animals but I can’t have any animals at home because my family and I rent a house and our landlord says no pets.
Kim
Hey Kim – Sure thing, you can use whatever type of sweetener you’d like here. And same goes for the milk – use whatever you’d like! I make this all the time with almond milk.
I actually don’t have a k-cup maker so I’m not totally sure – I typically use either the stovetop or the microwave.
And thank you so much – she’s a spoiled little thing! 🙂
This is lovely try adding a little bit of evaporate milk to the recipe its even more yummy, think I need to leave my earl grey teabag in the cup as I like it stronger, but I did use decaf so perhaps that is why
Thanks Amie! I’ll have to try that next time – sounds wonderful! I don’t think I’ve ever made this with decaf so that could definitely be part of it!
Made it again with earl grey teabag not the decaf and definatly notice a difference 🙂 love your website
Oh good! Thanks for letting me know Amie! And thank you 🙂
I made this, but instead used half a cup of water and milk, because my cup wasn’t big enough. I also used peppermint tea, and frothed the milk a bit. It was DELICIOUS!
Thanks,
Morgan
So glad you enjoyed it Morgan! I’ll have to try it with peppermint tea – sounds great!
Ashley, this latte was perfect!! Finally had a quiet evening (all the kids are sleeping) and really enjoyed it!! Thank you!!
Yay! So glad to hear this Nicole!
That’s the best time to enjoy a nice latte! When kids are in bed! I plan to do the same tonight! 😉
Enjoy Jana!
Home on summer vacation and its too hot to go outside to Starbucks! So I decided to whip up this lovely recipe; only to find out that I was out of Earl Grey Tea. Instead I sub Black and followed the recipe accordingly. It was LOVELY! Added a couple of ice cubes and I had my midday fix right at home. 🙂
So so glad you enjoyed it! I agree – it is too hot outside right now! Is it bad that I’m ready for Fall?
I just tried this, substituting the milk with almond milk and it tastes really good. I just haven’t figured out how to froth the milk.
So glad you enjoyed it! I haven’t tried it this way yet but here’s a quick and easy way to froth milk: http://www.seededatthetable.com/2012/09/19/diy-quick-easy-milk-froth/
I realise you posted this a fair while ago but I just came across it recently whilst searching for other Earl Grey related recipes. Cannot wait to try it! I’ve never had one of these; my local Starbucks has definitely done them, but I love a sweet latté and I love Earl Grey.
Great blog, BTW; interesting recipes and gorgeous photography.
Let me know if you give it a try! And thank you for the sweet comment : )
As someone who works at starbucks, I can tell you that you’re making this just right! I like your cinnamon addition, that’s the one thing that starbucks is missing and probably hasn’t thought of. Awesome job.
Thanks Arielle!
I never thought to add cinnamon 🙂 sounds good!
I love the cinnamon in this too : )
Thank you for the recipe! Love your site! Will definitely be a regular. Thanks. 🙂 – joody
Thanks Joody, glad you liked it! : )
