Detox Green Smoothie with Avocado
Tropical and refreshing, this creamy detox green smoothie with avocado is a perfect healthy snack or breakfast! Filled with mango, ginger, cucumber and spinach, it’s satisfying and delicious. Dairy free, gluten free and vegan.
I am a smoothie monster. So is the husband. Our obsession with smoothies is so ridiculous that when we are out of town and can’t make them, we both complain.
So despite the fact that I’m a total cliché for sharing an avocado green smoothie in January, I promise that this is something we make on a regular basis.
One of those recipes that I make day in and day out for myself and the husband … and yet somehow never thought to post on this site before now.
Now, I will admit that I kinda sorta hate the word detox. Maybe I should have just called this a plain green smoothie. I don’t know.
But. My point is that I believe that small decisions daily help create a healthier lifestyle! Like kicking your morning off with a fruit and veggie packed smoothie.
To sort of re-set things, start your day right and put you in the mindset to make better decisions all day long. No crazy detox diets please! Okay thanks.
Anyway. Let’s discuss this pretty green number.
Let’s Talk Ingredients
We start with some frozen mango chunks – sort of nice and neutral yet tropical – which pair perfectly with the fresh ginger. Ginger has such wonderful healing properties – which is especially important during cold and flu season!
Now, we also have some cucumber, avocado and baby spinach. They all help to bump up the nutrition content and give your body a boost.
The cucumber brings a refreshing quality to the smoothie, the avocado makes it so thick and creamy and don’t worry about the spinach – you really don’t taste it.
We blend it all together with some unsweetened almond milk and a splash of vanilla.
And then you’re looking at one of our go-to breakfasts.
Tools I Love & Use To Make This Recipe (contains affiliate links):
- Breville Hemisphere Control Blender – I upgraded to this blender about two years ago (after using a $20 crazy loud one for the longest time). I absolutely love it and it’s a nice step in between a cheap-o blender and the super duper pricey ones.

Ingredients
- 1 cup frozen mango chunks
- ¼ cup peeled and diced cucumber
- ¼ cup diced avocado
- ½ to 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup (or to taste)
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds
- splash of vanilla extract
- 1 (1 inch) piece fresh ginger, peeled and minced
- 1 cup packed fresh baby spinach leaves
- 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
Instructions
- Add all the ingredients to a blender and process until smooth. Add additional milk if needed to get it going in the blender.
- Serve immediately (because of the avocado and chia seeds this smoothie thickens up fast - so if you do let it sit, stir it up with a spoon or knife before drinking to loosen!).
Notes
If you are new to using fresh ginger in smoothies, you can start with less and always add more to taste! We love it and sometimes add even more than what’s listed.
You can also certainly use any sweetener of choice.

Replace DETOX with DELICIOUS in the title and you’ve got a real winner!! I love this recipe. To help chill it a little more since my Nutribullet Rx has a tendency to warm smoothies in it’s brief one minute cycle, I also freeze the cut up cukes! For a little sweetness I add 2-4 pitted dates and a sprinkle of stevia. I live on green smoothies since going “nutritarian” earlier this year. The Eat to Live plan calls for huge green salads to start every meal, which is near impossible for someone missing all of their lower molars. The smoothies have saved my life! My waistline is shrinking, my blood glucose (I’m type 2 diabetic) is low enough that I am reducing my insulin, my cholesterol is off the charts (TO THE LOW SIDE!!), and my blood pressure is normalizing.
Thanks for sharing your wonderful recipes!!!
Oh I’m so happy to hear it!! Thanks so much for letting me know! I love using dates in smoothies too – they are just so good! And huge congrats on the improvements to your health – that’s awesome!
This sounds like a great way to start the day off, so fresh and tasty.
I am the same way with my green smoothie, I actually miss is after a day or two. And I’m always looking for a new twist on the green smoothie – I love the ginger and cucumber here. And I bet the Avocado makes it so creamy!
Yes! I cannot go long at all without one! haha 🙂
I love adding frozen mango to smoothies! This one sounds perfect with avocado and ginger. I’m pulling out my blender for tomorrow’s breakfast!
Oh my gosh! You guys are adorable! I wish I craved smoothies as much as you do! I just feel too cold to drink them in the winter and I love to chew my breakfast…. but I should really try this one because I think it could be a real game changer!! Looks amazing and so refreshing and creamy! Love that you added avocado! Thanks for sharing! 🙂 Hope that you have a great weekend!
haha you would think with the cold I wouldn’t want them but so not the case! Thanks Cailee!!
I just started to add Ginger to my smoothies last Fall and I think it makes a huge difference! I don’t think your smoothie withdrawal is crazy…but I carry tea bags of my favorite green tea in my purse lol 🙂
I love avocados! This smoothie looks so creamy and delicious!
Ouhh, this sounds right up my alley!! I have been having a hard time drinking smoothies during the winter, but I recently got back into drinking them! Will be making this recipe next, I’ve got some avocadoes ripening at the moment and they will definitely be used as soon as they are ready :).
My day would be off to a cheerful start if I had this bright green smoothie for breakfast. So pretty! The avocado plus the gel-like chia must make this smoothie ultra-smooth! Add in fresh ginger and I am sold! ( Two fresh ginger tips: I find that the ginger at the Asian markets is fresher and way less expensive than at the regular supermarket. The owner of my favorite Asian market showed me that the easiest way to peel ginger, is to scrape off the skin with a regular teaspoon. 🙂 ) Thanks, Ashley!
Oh that’s so interesting that it’s cheaper at the asian markets – we use it so often that that’s worth looking into!! Happy Friday Wendy!
First, congratulations on your new site…looks beautiful Ashley!
This smoothie sounds and looks delicious, I love the addition of avocado…creamy and rich…
Enjoy the rest of your week 🙂
Thank you so much Juliana!
What a great smoothie! I always forget about avocados in smoothies. I love the addition of fresh ginger here too! Must try next time I bust out my blender. 🙂
This smoothie sounds amazing!! A detox is absolutely needed too after all the holiday indulging 🙂 Even though it’s halfway through Jan I still feel like I need a good detox 🙂 Also I don’t know if I’ve said it yet, but I’m totally obsessed with your new site and name. It looks incredible!
Thanks so much Chelsea!! 🙂 Happy weekend!
Smoothies are definitely a great breakfast choice! The green color of this one is gorgeous!
Oh I LOVE that you put ginger in there, can only imagine how well it goes with the mango and spinach! I love the looks of this smoothie (and this is coming from someone who is a little scared of green smoothies) 😉 I would totally try this!
haha I resisted trying them for the longest time and now I’m obsessed!!
Oh Ashley…I don’t really make smoothies but I just might need to take a closer look and start. This is timely because I just tiptoed into smoothie making with a 3-ingredient banana one today…it was really good! Dare I start to get deeper into it and make something like this. If you say it’s this good, I know it is! Looks beautiful
I like it! Baby steps! I think my first smoothie was strawberries, milk and yogurt!!
Lol, there isn’t anything wrong with wanting your smoothie in the morning, Ashley! We all have our quirks! And I can totally understand this one, because this smoothie sounds delicious! I am loving all the ingredients you used, especially the mango, ginger and cucumber! Now THIS is a detox I can support! Pinned! Cheers, lovely!
I am all for a green smoothie, but you know what? I hardly ever put avocado in smoothies. I get that it’s an easy way to get in some healthy fats, but I just think I could be eating some delicious guacamole with it haha
haha guac is the best!
This looks lovely! I LOVE smoothies and have just recently converted Bf to them 😀 Love how versatile, delicious and healthy they are. Somehow I haven’t made one yet with ginger and cucumber, but love the idea of how refreshing and slightly tangy this will be.
ps. I agree with you Ashley, somehow detox has such a negative connotation in my head too :-/
It does! And yet it doesn’t have to … but then you hear about some extreme things people try!! Craziness!
Love it, I’m a smoothie maniac too! And I also posted a smoothie recipe today – great minds think alike my friend! 🙂
I love it!!
I’m making this when I wake up! I need it more than you know! LOL
haha enjoy!! 🙂
Cucumber! Why do I never put cucumber in my smoothies?? That’s such a great idea. And Sarah M just posted a green smoothie with ginger too and now I feel like I am missing out! I need to get on it!
Yes! Do it! 🙂
I feel the same way about the word detox but let’s be honest, it’s much more likely to get attention in January when you throw that word in there. 😉
It certainly deserves the attention too because it sounds delicious! I love the idea to add avocado to make it super creamy. And cucumber is such a unique addition too! Sounds so good!
haha very very true!!
You are such a good gal for doing these detox smoothies. I just don’t have the strength you have! 😛
I have only added greens to my smoothies but never other veggies…it took me forever to get brave enough to add greens! I love that you can pretty much pack anything into a smoothie and it’ll be delicious, and adding more veggies would be a great way to get more into my kids. haha This looks delicious, and I love the color!
You should definitely try adding more!
Haha yes to the word detox but sometimes that’s the only way to describe it…especially after the holiday cookie season 🙂 Love love love this green smoothie! It’s so creamy and the color is so pretty!
Oh wow – I’m mesmerized by how creamy this is! I will take both glasses! I must say I adore a good green smoothie with avocados! Love your addition of ginger to this too Ashley! !
Ginger is the best!
Hahaha I am the same and also hate the word detox but it’s great as a descriptor here! Smoothie monster….smoothie-ing? I love smoothies and especially with avocado they’re so creamy and delicious!
haha I know! I felt like it best described this but at the same time I hate using it!! 🙂
I love smoothies! This looks so delicious and healthy too! It’s great to start the morning with a smoothie like this to power up for the day ahead!
What a fantastic smoothie! This is a meal replacement for me. Like today, I spent over 100 bucks at the grocery store and seemed to buy no real food to actually make dinner with. Ahhh. Opps! But I think I can muster up an avocado and they are so filling! Was enjoying avocados last night at Chilli’s. (my mom took me out!!!!! Thanks mom. And anything with the word detox in it wins my heart.
Thanks Laura!! Aw, I like it – thanks mom is right!
So creamy and delicious!! I need one now.
I love adding avocados to smoothies!!! They have such a lovely creamy texture. This sounds so delicious Ashley, especially with the ginger and vanilla! Yum!!! And I am loooooving your new blog name and logo! <3
They really do! And thanks Harriet!!
You’re reminding me that it’s been pretty much forever since I sipped on a green smoothie! I seriously LOVE that there’s avocado in this green beauty! I’ll bet it makes an ultra-creamy texture!
I have these phases where I just crave smoothies, and now is one of those times. This green version looks delicious, Ashley! I’ve never tried adding avocado to a smoothie before, so I’m definitely going to try this next time. Love the pretty green color, too!
You should definitely try using them in smoothies! Makes it so thick and creamy!!
