Chocolate Cherry Oat Smoothie
This chocolate cherry oat smoothie is the perfect grab-and-go breakfast! With oats, frozen cherries, cocoa powder and almond milk, it’s hearty and satisfying. Dairy free, gluten free and vegan.
I know. It’s January and I’m sharing a smoothie recipe. How cliché of me.
But. I’ve been making this since the fall and well, it was time to share. I’ve been rotating back and forth between this bad boy and my favorite green smoothie. This one wins when I’m in the mood for chocolate for breakfast.
And we all know that chocolate for breakfast is pretty much always a very good thing.
Especially when it’s combined with good-for-you ingredients so you can chug that glass like nobody’s business. Okay, well maybe don’t chug it, but you get where I’m going with this.
About This Chocolate Cherry Smoothie
And personally, I think that chocolate + cherries is a magical combination.
Which probably stems from my teenage days when I would eat an entire container of Ben and Jerry’s cherry garcia ice cream in one sitting. And not even gain a pound. What I would give for that metabolism again, eh?
But since those days are behind me, I’ll happily settle for this smoothie instead.
We have sweet dark cherries. Rolled oats. Cocoa powder. Hemp seeds. Those are totally optional but I’ve gotten really into them lately and love adding some to pretty much all my smoothies.
We’ll add in a touch of honey and a splash of vanilla extract, all combining into one sweet and chocolatey smoothie that still packs a nutritious punch.
So go right on ahead and make it a smoothie kind of morning. Although, maybe bundle up with a blanket while drinking. Because baby it’s cold outside!

Chocolate Cherry Oat Smoothie
This chocolate cherry oat smoothie is the perfect grab-and-go breakfast! With oats, frozen cherries, cocoa powder and almond milk, it’s hearty and satisfying. Dairy free, gluten free and vegan.
Ingredients
- ½ cup old fashioned rolled oats
- 1 cup frozen cherries
- 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
- 1 heaping tablespoon unsweetened dutch process cocoa powder*
- 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup or honey**
- splash of vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon hulled hemp seeds or 1 tablespoon chia seeds (optional)***
Instructions
- Add the oats to a blender. Process until finely ground, about 15 seconds.
- Add in the cherries, milk, cocoa powder, maple syrup, vanilla and hemp or chia seeds (if using). Process until the mixture is completely smooth.
- Adjust with additional sweetener if needed to achieve desired sweetness. Serve immediately.
Notes
*You can also use regular unsweetened cocoa powder in place of the dutch process cocoa powder. I’ve used both, just personally prefer the dutch - makes it feel like a deeper chocolate flavor!
**To keep this smoothie vegan, use the pure maple syrup to sweeten (and not the honey).
***If you are using the chia seeds, make sure you drink the smoothie and don’t let it sit for too long. They make the mixture get very thick if you let it sit for awhile before drinking!

Yum this is good. I love the thin consistency, it’s kind of like a healthy-tasting (but good) chocolate milk. Or even a thin healthy brownie batter? I don’t know but I like it haha Thank you!
haha I’m so happy to hear it! Thanks for taking the time to let me know 🙂

Hi Ashley, I love the look of this smoothie! – Would it be possible for me to add it to an inlinkz round-up I’m doing of smoothies on my blog please?
Thanks,
Annie
Sure! Thanks Annie!
Yay for smoothie season! This looks so indulgent and decadent, yet I love the fact that there’s oats and healthy stuff in there so there’s zero guilt. 😉 Pretty photos, Ashley! Pinned.
I love smoothies practically 365 days, rain or shine, winter or summer 🙂
“cliche” on a food blog?? No way!! 😉 Be cliche all you want; I love this smoothie. It sounds like dessert! 🙂
You are not the only winter-smoothie addict/lover, my friend – last night, I was craving a smoothie so bad – I had one and then had to chase it down with an extra steamy mug of coffee! Loving your addition of filling oats! And thanks for the giveaway!
haha yes! I always have hot coffee with mine too lately!
Chocolate + cherries IS totally magical! Why is that??! I need to get on this adding oats to smoothies game! Looks fabulous Ashley!
If I am ever in a bit of a naughty mood then chocolate is my breakfast go to 😉 And you are right chocolate and cherries make a fantastic flavour combo, love the look of this smoothie.
You are speaking my love language here. Always down for chocolate at breakfast time and chocolate + cherries are the best. So you can be cliche all you want. I love this smoothie!

First, your pictures are so pretty! I love the background.
This smoothie looks great, love the combo of chocolate + cherry!
Thanks Pamela!
I absolutely ADORE cherries and chocolate, and I can totally relate to the Ben & Jerry’s thing. And the metabolism thing. 😛 Also I have been a smoothie drinking fiend lately, so this couldn’t have come at a better time! Pinning!
I seriously wish I wasn’t allergic to cherries now because this combination used to be my absolute favourite! I love the addition of hemp seeds, I throw those in my smoothie too and I love how creamy it gets. Hmmm…I’m still known to eat a tub of ice cream in one (or two) sittings 😉
haha I’ve done it in two sittings recently 🙂 I try to ahem, control myself a bit! lol
LOVE cliches if they involve gorgeous smoothies like this one! I LOVE chocolate cherry flavor combos! I used to make a smoothie with frozen cherries and cocoa powder and chocolate almond milk and was obsessed. This one sounds even better with those oats and the chia seeds – delicious!!
It’s such a good combo! I’m pretty obsessed with it! 🙂
I will be giving this a go for sure. I love your site, but these days I’m eating clean, and I love your site even more. thanks!
Aw, yay! Thanks Tracy!
Confession: when I was younger my mom and sister loved Cherry Garcia and bought it all the time and I hated it! I was always so made when they got it! But now that I’m older and I know what good is, I love the chocolate and cherry combo and would happily chug this smoothie 🙂
haha I love it – it’s so funny how our tastes change over time!
Oh yes, chocolate for breakfast is always a good thing! Especially when it’s cherries and chocolate. This is like dessert! And you know, I’ve never tried adding oats to my smoothie but I’ll have to give it a try with this recipe because it sounds perfect!
Yes! You should definitely try oats in smoothies!!
If smoothies in January are cliche, then my entire blog was a cliche last week, haha. I love that you combined chocolate and cherries for this! That’s a smoothie flavor I don’t think I would have thought of, but need to try asap! And I pretty much always feel like having chocolate for breakfast, so yeah. Pinned! 🙂
haha hey, I say bring on all the smoothies!! Thanks Beth!
I am willing to give up my morning homemade mocha frap for this, Ashley. That is serious stuff. It really looks so good! I never craved a smoothie more.
Thanks Monica!! A homemade mocha frap sounds pretty darn delicious too!
Chocolate and cherries sounds like the perfect breakfast to me! This smoothie looks delicious! Love the oats and hemp seeds in here. This is such a tasty and healthy way to start off the morning!
I could totally start my day this way EVERY day! Chocolate, cherries, and oats, yes indeed! Maybe smoothies are cliche in January, but gotta love ’em, and I’m glad you posted this. Pinned. 🙂
I’ve been in such a smoothie mood recently. This one looks so good. I love chocolate and cherries together!
That smoothie looks delicious Ashley! I love cherries and chocolate together too, so good! Haven’t tried it with the oats though, going to have to try that!
Chocolate and cherry, that so good. I will definitely make it. Looks so good!
I’d drink this based on the cherry garcia comparison alone! I usually don’t like cherry flavored things, but I’ve found if it’s paired with chocolate I’m game. This looks so good!!
Oh yes – chocolate for breakfast is something I can definitely get behind – and with a little healthy boost – I’m in! Great idea Ashley!
Thanks Jess! 🙂
Looks delicious! Great, healthy way to start the week. I love the combo of cherries and chocolate!
Chocolate and cherries?! I’m in! This is my kind of smoothie!
I love the name of this smoothie, Ashley! Chocolate and cherries were meant to be together, and I love that you added oats, too! Sounds like a perfect breakfast or mid-morning snack!
Happy Monday Ashley!! I totally agree, now that I’ve hit the side of the fence that is closer to 40 than 30 (bleh) my metabolism is about as fast as molasses. So I love this smoothie grounded in chocolate. With of course the addition of oatmeal and granola, my other favorite things!!
haha it stinks we can’t eat ice cream all the time anymore right??
